Announcement: Death of PPS Trustee Dr Gabrielle Syme

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of one of our Psychologists Protection Society Trust Board members Dr Gabrielle Syme. She passed away peacefully on Saturday 25th January 2014 at her home in Yorkshire, surrounded by her family.

Dr Syme was a member of PPS for several decades, joining the Board in 2012 to help provide assistance to fellow professionals who find themselves in difficulties. She said knowing that PPS was there for her over the years, should she have required assistance, was a great comfort and she wanted to volunteer her spare time to support colleagues and “give something back”. Dr Syme made a significant and important contribution during her tenure as Trustee, her knowledge, experience and compassion was invaluable to the Trust and our members.

Dr Syme was a psychodynamic counsellor/psychotherapist, working in many different settings over the years, including private practice. She was also involved in the training of therapists and has written several books on aspects of therapy, including bereavement and dual relationships in therapy. In 1996, Dr Syme was elected Chairperson of the British Association for Counselling (now BACP) and was subsequently honoured with a lifetime BACP Fellowship, bestowed on those who have made a significant contribution to the counselling and psychotherapy field.

Fellow PPS Trustee and Vice-Chair Christina Campbell made the following tribute: “Gabrielle was such a wise, gentle and intelligent woman, with a good sense of humour. I can remember as a ‘young therapist’, admiring her work and never imagining I would ever be sitting alongside her at BACP House in recent years…. She will be a huge loss to her family and friends, but also to the profession…”
