The Psychologists Protection Society Trust is hosting its annual AGM in Manchester on the evening of Friday 2nd November 2018.

The Psychologists Protection Society is a not-for-profit organisation, run for the benefit of members across the UK and Republic of Ireland.  The main purpose of PPS is to provide members with assistance when complaints are received from clients and other professional protection matters.  Protecting counsellors, psychologists, psychotherapists and professionals from related fields for over 40 years, the Psychologists Protection Society is the only defence organisation run for therapists, by therapists.

The Board of Trustees are looking for 2 speakers to host an individual CPD event each, before and after our AGM. The Trustees have prepared a short list of suggested working topics that they would be particularly keen to see presented at the AGM.

  • Risk assessment and limits to competency
  • Contracting, expectations and informed consent
  • How do we measure client satisfaction – does it measure our competence as Therapists?
  • How to cope with professional bullying – the Institution, the Supervisor, the Team
  • Managing Personal Safety for the Therapist
  • Working with Borderline Personality Disorders
  • Diversity & Ethical Issues
  • Working in Private Practice – Standards and Ethics

The Trustees would be keen to consider other suggestions that are appropriate to PPS Membership. These should be of a nature that promotes safe and ethical practice, or addresses potential problems relevant to a multidisciplinary audience of therapists.

Would you be interested in submitting a proposal to speak at our AGM?

We would be looking for a presentation, followed by a short questions and answers session, an hour in total. We expect somewhere in the region of 60 attendees on the night, who are all PPS members. The event will also be streamed live to an internet audience of several hundred and recorded so that it can be viewed retrospectively on our online portal – www.theprofessionalpractitioner.net. You can watch presentations of previous speakers at our past AGMs on this site.

Proposals should be submitted to PPS by Monday 14th May 2018. These should include a short bio, an abstract of your proposed talk and your rates for the event. We are happy to discuss any requirements or answer questions at any point, please do not hesitate to contact Ewan at the PPS Office on 0333 320 8074 or ewan@ppstrust.org. Proposals will be forwarded to our Board of Trustees for final selection and we would hope to confirm the successful proposals at the end of May.

PPS would normally arrange and pay for accommodation and travel costs in addition to your fee where required.

Announcement: Death of Former PPS Chairman Dr Douglas McFadzean

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of former Psychologists Protection Society Trust Chairman Dr Douglas McFadzean. He passed away at home in Stirling, Scotland on Thursday 28th June 2018.

Douglas was one of NHS Scotland’s most experienced counsellors in primary care and was formerly the Executive Director of the professional body COSCA – “Counselling & Psychotherapy in Scotland”. Dr McFadzean was a member of The Psychologists Protection Society for several decades before joining the Board in 2010 to help provide assistance to fellow professionals who find themselves in difficulties. He served as Chairman for just over a year.

PPS Services Director Ewan Murray said “In 2010 my father, PPS founder Sandy Murray decided to turn PPS into a not-for-profit Trust. Dr McFadzean was his first choice as a Trustee, as he knew he would bring wisdom, strength and humour to the role. Sandy was very pleased when Douglas became Chairman, overseeing the organisation’s transition into a not-for-profit Trust. We all came to appreciate Dr McFadzean’s valuable input during his tenure and he remained in contact after his retirement to provide sage advice when needed. I will remember him fondly”.

Dr McFadzean is survived by his wife Christina and two children.
